Photos and Memories
Kenny Brack, Stephan Gregoire and Affonse Giaffone crash on the pace lap of the 1997 "Indianapolis 500"

I've been a serious "hobbyist" racing photographer, since 1981, and I've taken thousands of racing photographs during this period. However, the number of crash photos I've caught can be counted on the fingers of one hand. I was getting as many shots as I could, of the rows of cars, in the 1997 "500" starting grid, as the cars passed by turn four, to the waiting green flag to start the race. I was following the fifth row, of cars, with my old Nikon FE2, mounted with an equally old Nikon AI 135 mm lens, when I caught this crash. It was pure luck, but it makes a neat shot.
