"Boys and Girls
They come from all around
From dear old Stockholm
To Copenhagen town
Forget their troubles
In tasty riddum n' rime
So here you are
And now it's party time
Wrap your mind
Around this sound
And let the goodness ripple down
Goodbye to Lonely Street
You're in the Catbird Seat
At THE STEELY DAN SHOW
If you got backpacks
And pointy little shoes
Late-model roadsters
Or just those walkin' blues
A case of heartache
That you're too numb to fight
A secret sorrow
That keeps you up all night
Well don't you fret
It's not your fault
Just lay it all on Don and Walt
Just trip out on these hits
The groove that never quits
At THE STEELY DAN SHOW
So buy a program
And/or a hat
You don't pass up a deal like that
It's only promo stuff
But hey it's good enough
For THE STEELY DAN SHOW"
It is my pleasure to present Cindy Mizelle, Carolyn Leonhart and Cynthia Calhoun, the backup vocalists for the 2003 Steely Dan "Everything Must Go" tour, as they are pictured from left to right. Aren't they lovely?
Cindy is striking in an urban way The excitement she creates, as she poses so -. Let me use electrically because that is the most politically correct, respectful description I can offer about how I feel when I look at this photo. Or maybe a frequently used Donald Fagen adjective "yummy" suits the mood. Yes. "Yummy" it is.
Cindy Mizelle's photo evokes images of Guy Nadeau and I wandering the near north side of Chicago, either flirting with or making comments about the city women who passed by. God bless them all. As I sit here, typing these words, a solitary soul in under shorts, I wish I could take a trip back to those times and I wish Guy was still here.
Anyway, Cindy I am forever a fan and am going to find your solo cd because if you sound as good as you look, then I have to hear your music.
This photo was taken on the evening (I'm guessing intermission) of August 8, 2003 of the Steely Dan performance at the United Center in Chicago. I was at the show on a cool, clear summer Friday evening on West Madison Street, in the same building where Michael Jordan reigned supreme during the final seasons of glory for the Chicago Bulls.
The only time I was in the United Center previously came in early April 1998, when my new bride (now separated from yours truly) and I attended an Eric Clapton concert, which is another of the more recent discoveries (Eric Clapton that is) of my middle age years.
I hope Don and Walt don't mind that I borrowed the photo from the official Steely Dan website. Surely they won't because I am an unabashed fan and have been plugging their magnificent offering "Everything Must Go" since the cd hit the stores in June.
The latest album provides a musical backdrop for one of the most miserable periods of my life. But had the new Steely Dan music not been available, I might have lost it. Walt Weiskopf's wailing sax at the introduction to "Everything Must Go" is a trusted companion as I face the blues each day.
Carolyn and Cynthia are both adorable too. Carolyn is married to fellow band member and trumpet player Michael Leonhart. The Leonharts were both part of the 2000 "Two Against Nature" tour and again in 2003. One of my fond memories of attending the show in Milwaukee on June 23, 2000, was the spot light shining off the jewel in Carolyn's navel.
Cynthia Calhoun is as cute as they come. She caught my attention at the 2000 Milwaukee show, with the friendly enthusiasm she showed the crowd from the extreme right side of the stage. Her exuberance and the sweet sound of her voice was one of the highlights of my first Steely Dan show, sitting in the amphitheater on the shore of Lake Michigan on my 54th birthday that cool, humid June night with my pal Tony Smith.
I wonder what happened to flaming redhead Victoria Cave, who was the other backup vocalist on the 2000 tour? It's okay. Cindy Mizelle was nice compensation for Victoria.
Don and Walt always come through.
